FIND YOUR Freedom

Most of my earlier work is in black and white.

While some may see this as limiting, I saw black and white to be freeing and exploratory. It removed the distraction of color, and allowed me to focus on composition and subject matter.

Recently though, I added color to my work. It created an additional step to the editing process that further articulated an emotion in the photo, and allows for another dimension of contrast.

I still felt that this territory was unfamiliar to me. Using color in my documentary work continued to feel limiting and overbearing. The river of expression was blocked.

So many colors to play with. Where do I start?

Due to this confusion, my practice led me to another project, and there I found freedom. I found where the river flowed.

I used two things that I currently feel close to me as my subject. Trees, and movement.

This photographic experiment lies at the intersection of color, movement, time, and location. I was intentional about my movement with the camera, duration of exposure, and expressing trees in all their shapes and sizes over the duration of the day.

I’ve entered into the abstract, freeing me once again, but in a different way, in a way that allows color to express itself with no real world boundaries. It was fun to play with no rules, and I feel like I can approach color in a totally different way when it comes to my documentary work.

I hope this collection continues to grow over the years, if it continues to give and allows me to express.
