OUR GRANDPARENTS - BEARERS OF WISDOM AND the soul of resistance

I am looking to create a series of portraits of grandparents related to the Palestinian experience. Whether that be about their childhood, their adolescence or how they’re living now. It could be about their school, or how they got to Jordan, or how they built a successful business or advocacy group abroad. I’m hoping to hear all kinds of stories that carry wisdom and methods of endurance and resistance despite all that has happened on this land.

These are portraits of my grandmother and her two sisters. They’ve shared with me many stories of their childhood in Jerusalem, and how they were displaced to Jordan in the cold days of winter in a tent in Sweileh, and their good times in Riyadh in the 60s. These portraits are to document their existence and share with their loved ones. 

These stories are important to document now more than ever. Our grandparents carry inspiring stories, and I hope to inspire others with their stories the same way they might have inspired you.

يحمل أجدادنا في ذاكرتهم حِكماً ودروساً في الصمود والمقاومة. إن كان لديك جد أو جدة تحمل قصة مؤثرة، وترغب في التعاون معي على مشروع شخصي، تواصل معي.

اعمل على جمع عدداً البورتريهات لأجدادنا يتعلق بالتجربة الفلسطينية، سواء كانت قصتهم عن طفولتهم، مراهقتهم، أو كيف يعيشون اليوم. قد تكون عن مدرستهم، أو كيف وصلوا إلى الأردن، أو كيف أسّسوا عملاً ناجحاً أو  عمل خيري هنا أو في المهجر. أريد سماع جميع أنواع القصص التي تحمل في طياتها حِكماً وأساليب في التحمل والمقاومة، رغم كل ما مرّ على هذه الأرض.

هذه صور لجدتي وشقيقتيها. لقد شاركنني العديد من القصص عن طفولتهن في القدس، وعن تهجيرهم إلى الأردن في أيام الشتاء الباردة الى خيمة صغيرة في صويلح، وعن أيامهن الجميلة في الرياض في الستينيات. كما تحدثن عن ندمهن في الحياة، وعن أوجاعهن، والقيم التي حملنها معهن طيلة حياتهن. 

هذا المشروع فرصةً لمشاركة قصص أصبحت اليوم أكثر أهمية للتوثيق من أي وقت مضى، قصص تندر مع مرور الأيام وتقدّمنا في العمر. يحمل أجدادنا وجداتنا قصصاً ملهمة، وأتمنى أن تُلهم هذه القصص الآخرين، كما قد تكون ألهمتك أنت.
